Hydrographic Data Processor

Position Overview

The role of ‘Hydrographic Data Processor’ is a multidisciplinary role that will vary with workload and client requirements. The role is responsible for hydrographic data processing, generating client deliverables, and survey report writing. It is a great opportunity to build key industry-related skills, gain exposure to a variety of projects in the offshore renewable energy sector. Successful candidates will receive industry leading inhouse training on hydrographic data processing techniques and established workflows using CARIS HIPS & SIPS. Supported by an experienced and committed team of surveyors, the Hydrographic Data Processor will develop their skill set to carry out the following tasks within our growing company. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to manage and prioritise workloads whilst being mindful of timescales and both internal and external demands.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Conduct Bathymetric processing and assist in maintaining quality and consistency of data processing and deliverable creation
  • Assist Processing and Project managers with reporting, charting & data management
  • Conduct short training sessions to help development of more junior staff
  • Assist with data archive and data repository management, ensuring safe storage of a large variety of data formats.
  • Assist with notifying software manufacturers of any bugs and assist with implementing solutions
  • Chart and chartlet creation in QGIS or ArcGIS for relevant project documentation
  • Data quality control and data assurance ensuring that it complies with the project scope
  • Follow and contribute to established data processing procedures and guidelines
  • Identification, investigation and troubleshooting inconsistencies in data, ensuring that it complies with the project scope of work
  • Report preparation based on Geophysical survey data and interpretation
  • Identifying and cataloging objects on the seabed, and production of target listings
  • Creation of Multibeam backscatter products, substrate and morphology characterisation
  • Providing a positive feedback loop to the infield survey team to improve data acquisition quality and practices
  • Project management of projects with low to intermediate complexity.
  • Project administration, client liaison, and resource allocation (IT, processing software)
  • Understanding and working to company QHSE standards
Required education/ experience & attributes
  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject such as Hydrography or other related marine or earth science.
  • At least 2 years’ experience collecting/processing hydrographic data
  • Competent in Hydrographic data processing without assistance, and thorough understanding of Hydrographic surveying principles, with experience/knowledge of Bathymetric suites, including PDS, QINSy and CARIS HIPS & SIPS.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Experience of training and mentoring.
  • Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to convey complex information in a training environment.
  • High level of IT literacy and highly competent in the use of all Microsoft Office applications including Word and Excel.
  • Methodical approach to handling large numbers of data files and the ability to manipulate large bathymetric data sets.
  • Experience with creating charts in QGIS and compiling concise and accurate survey reports.
  • Knowledge of Hydrographic survey planning and reporting
  • Independent thinker who has the ability to recognise development opportunities and take responsibility for their implementation.
Desired but not essential education/ experience & attributes
  • Work experience with GIS and spatial data
  • Prior industry experience working within a hydrographic surveying role or related industry
  • Project management experience
  • Previous work experience of using hydrographic software, such as QINSy, Teledyne PDS or Caris HIPS & SIPS (For graduate position, no experience is required for such bespoke hydrographic suites, but experience working with GIS and spatial data or experience of handling big data would be an advantage)
  • Experience with a scripting language (Python)
  • Full valid UK driving license
